Prenatal Doctor's Visit While Pregnant

On May 11th, about a week after coming home from Hawaii, I had a prenatal appointment that I could not wait to go to. I wanted my ob-gyn doctor to reassure me that my pregnancy was going well . My doctor performed a pap smear, checked my pelvis and uterus and said everything felt fine. I told her about my bleeding and spotting so she thought an ultrasound might be a good idea to make sure that everything was alright.

Prenatal Doctor's Visit

Since this was an early stage of pregnancy, I had a transvaginal ultrasound done. A transducer was used to check for the baby's heartbeat. The ultrasound technician found my little baby and the yolk sac which feeds the baby until the placenta is mature enough to start feeding the baby directly from my nutrients. The ultrasound technician assured me that the baby looked good. The heart was beating at around 160/bpm. She also measured the baby and from her measurement, the baby was a week younger than what I told them I was. So instead of the nine weeks that I thought I was, she said I was only at eight weeks into my pregnancy. I told her I was sure the last period that I had started on the 18th of March. The ultrasound measurement gave me a new due date a week later over the due date my doctor had originally given me. My due date went from December 23rd to December 29th.

And because this was my first visit, the nurse went over a lot of paperwork, talked about what I should expect and asked for questions or concerns that I may have. They provided me with a lot of brochures about what to do and not do while pregnant. There were things about blood testing for down syndrome as well as nutritional information for pregnant women. There were even samples of prenatal vitamins that I could try to help me decide on the right vitamins for me. I decided to take the ones with the DHA supplement.

I was very happy to find out everything was fine that I started to cry with joy as I walked out of the doctors office. The last doctor's visit I had for a pregnancy ended up being a miscarriage and so this was something very exciting for me. I called my husband while I was driving home to tell him about the good news from my doctor's visit. I was very relieved that the bleeding was really nothing after all. And now that I know I was only eight weeks pregnant, it started to make sense that the bleeding was nothing more than an implantation bleeding.

This new information also solved a big part of the puzzle that caused me to get depressed earlier in the year. My doctor informed me that I was not ovulating according to the test results they received from my blood test in January. It made sense that I was not ovulating at the time I had came in for the blood test because I did not ovulate 14 days after the first day of my last period. I actually ovulate about 21 days after the first day of my period. And although most women do ovulate about the same number of days after their periods, there are many women who ovulate earlier or later. And now I know that I ovulate a week later than the average. This also makes sense in that I have been trying to use this number to test if I were ovulating as well as trying to get pregnant around the 14th day after my period but have had no luck. So the only reason that I got pregnant was because we stopped trying, and no longer tried to get pregnant around the 14th day marker. My pregnancy was basically an accident.
